About Rouleauville

Rouleauville is the historical French neighbourhood of Calgary that is now known as Mission. The first permanent French Catholic mission in the area settled along the Bow River in 1883 as Notre Dame de la Paix. It was, for a time, the incorporated Village of Rouleauville before it was annexed to the City of Calgary in 1907 and renamed the district of Mission. Originally, the missionaries sought to establish peace between the colonists from eastern Canada, the Métis and the Indigenous peoples, particularly the Blackfoot. As well, they aimed to develop health care, trade and Catholic religious education in French.

The neighborhood is named after the Rouleau brothers, two notable mission residents who had a significant influence on the area. To learn more about the history of Rouleauville and its role in Calgary's francophone past, follow the link here here.
