Apply for the AFC Bursary for Kids

At Alliance Française of Calgary (AFC), we believe that every child should have the opportunity to learn French, regardless of their family's financial circumstances.

As a local non-profit organization committed to making French-language education accessible, we offer the AFC Bursary for Kids to support families experiencing financial challenges.

Our bursary program helps motivated young learners discover the French language, develop new skills, and become part of our vibrant Francophone community.

About the Bursary

The AFC Bursary provides financial assistance to children aged 7 to 15 who are interested in learning French.

Up to 100% of tuition fees covered for one session of group French classes (maximum 20 hours).
Up to 20 bursaries awarded per year, subject to available funding.
One bursary per family, covering a single session of classes.
Textbooks, summer camps, private lessons, and other programs are not included.

Bursaries are awarded based on financial need, student motivation, and course availability. As funding is limited, meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee a bursary.

While we would love to offer this program more frequently, its continuation depends on available funding and decisions made by our Board of Directors. Several factors, including financial capacity and community needs, will be considered.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the AFC Bursary for Kids, applicants must meet the following requirements.

Be a New AFC Student: The bursary is exclusively available to children who are not currently enrolled at AFC. Current AFC students are not eligible.
Be Between 7 and 15 Years Old: Applicants must be between 7 and 15 years old when beginning their French classes.
Demonstrate Financial Need: Families must provide proof of financial eligibility. A valid City of Calgary Fair Entry approval letter is our preferred documentation and is sufficient without additional income verification. Families living outside Calgary without Fair Entry approval may submit alternative documentation demonstrating financial need. AFC may request additional information if necessary.
Demonstrate Genuine Interest in Learning French: Applicants must show genuine motivation to learn French, assessed through a brief in-person evaluation with our education team. The child's interest and willingness to participate are important selection criteria. Our education team will assess the child's French level and recommend an appropriate class. Registration is not possible without this assessment, and the bursary can only be used if a suitable group class is available at a time that fits the family's schedule but this is not guaranteed..
Commit to Attending Classes: Recipients must attend classes regularly, participate actively, and demonstrate respect, and consideration for others.
Submit a Complete Application: All required information and supporting documentation must be provided. Incomplete applications will not be considered. This bursary does not cover TEF or TCF exam preparation.
