Treizième siècle, royaume du Mandé. Soundiata est un jeune prince de 25 ans qui passe ses journées loin de la cour royale. Il préfère chasser ou s'entrainer à l'écart, accompagné de Balla, son ami et griot-bègue. Cela pour éviter les méchancetés de ses demi-frères et de ses marâtres. Il est handicapé des deux jambes depuis son enfance. Passionné par les armes, sa distraction favorite est la chasse. Son autre secret est qu'il amoureux de la belle Noura. Son père, le roi Naré Maghan Konaté l'a imposé comme héritier.
