Alliance Française Calgary - Discussion about Francophonie

Being Francophone in Calgary: Why It Counts?

> Discussion

More than 86,000 people in Calgary speak French, nearly 7% of the city’s population. Among them, about 2% use French as their primary language. These figures reflect a diverse and dynamic Francophone presence shaped by heritage speakers, newcomers, bilingual families, students, and professionals.

What does this tell us about the role of French in Calgary today? How does the language continue to evolve in a multilingual and rapidly growing city?

Join us for an evening of thoughtful conversation exploring the history, vitality, and future of Francophonie in Calgary and beyond. Through perspectives and open dialogue, we will reflect on how French contributes to cultural life, education, professional pathways, and community identity.

The evening will include:

  • A historical overview of the evolution of Francophonie.
  • A panel discussion with exchanges on the role and impact of French today.

The panel brings together Cyrielle Faivre, Professor at the University of Calgary; Justine Huet, Professor at Mount Royal University; Natacha Bordier, professional translator; and Johani F.D., exam assessor. Teachers from Morocco, Québec, and France will also be present to contribute international perspectives and enrich the discussion.

The event will take place at Alliance Française on Friday, March 27 at 6:15 p.m. Open to participants aged 15 and up, this welcoming evening offers an opportunity to connect, reflect, and celebrate the many expressions of French in Calgary. The discussion will be moderated by Antoine, Communications Manager at Alliance Française, ensuring an engaging and inclusive exchange.

  • “We want to show that Francophonie is not just about language, but a true cultural bridge between people.”
    Antoine, Communications Manager.
