Soirée Romans Graphiques
Yvan Alagbé - Brigitte Findalky & Lewis trondheim
Tuesday, May 15h at 6.00PM at AFC @ cSPACE.
Meet 3 famous French comics authors during a special evening at Alliance Française. They will introduce you to their world and present their different works.
The French Beninese cartoonist Yvan Alagbé has been an influential player in the French avant-garde comics scene since the early nineties. His first book, Yellow Negroes became an instant cult classic. It tells the story of the romance between Claire, a white Frenchwoman, and Alain, a Beninese immigrant in the country illegally. The author uses a sparse palette to deliver a powerful message about immigrants. It has been recently expanded and translated into English. The striking, uncomfortable, poetic Yellow Negroes And Other Imaginary Creatures is a must-read comic.
Poppies of Iraq is Brigitte Findakly’s nuanced tender chronicle of her relationship with her homeland Iraq, co-written and drawn by her husband, the acclaimed cartoonist Lewis Trondheim. They share memories of her middle class childhood touching on cultural practices, the education system, Saddam Hussein’s state control and her family’s history as Orthodox Christians in the arab world. This is an intimate and wide-ranging story of how one can become separated from one’s homeland and still feel intimately connected yet ultimately estranged.
You will have the chance to purchase a copy of the work and get it signed by the authors.
The evening will be co-hosted by Dr. Fanny Macé, professor at University of Calgary. After finishing her Master’s degree at
La Sorbonne-Paris 4, Fanny came to Calgary to pursue a doctoral degree in Language & Literacy in the Werklund
School of Education at the University of Calgary. Today, she is an instructor in the Division of French and Francophone Studies
in the School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures and Cultures in the same university. Her main research interests
concentrate on Sociolinguistics and Applied Linguistics. She is also working on issues related to (Trans-) Cultural
Competencies and Translation (Reading French Strategies).
The presentation will be in French. This is a FREE activity.
